The refusal

I turn down most of the work I’m offered.

Dentists, law firms, e-commerce brands, recruiters, SaaS startups, restaurants, construction firms, estate agents. All of them have asked. All of them got the same answer: no, and here’s someone who does that.

The reason is arithmetic rather than principle. An agency that takes any client starts every project from zero. It has to be told what an MPAN is, why a contract end date matters more than a postcode, and why an out-of-contract customer is worth calling before a fixed-term one. That education costs three months, and the client pays for it inside the retainer.

I’ve had the same conversation with brokers since 2014. When you tell me your half-hourly desk converts better than your microbusiness desk but your site sends everything into one form, I know what that costs you before you finish the sentence. The twentieth broker site is not the first one repeated — it’s the first one with nineteen sets of results behind it.

There’s a cost to this and I’ll name it. I can’t bring you a case study from a completely different industry, and if you want an agency with a design award wall, I’m the wrong call. What you get instead is someone who has already made the expensive mistakes in your sector, at somebody else’s expense.

Services

What I build.

Seven services. Most brokers start with one and add a second once the first is paying for itself.

01

Broker website design

A site built around the quote request, not around a slideshow. Fast on a mid-range Android, clear on what you actually procure, and structured so a business owner can tell in ten seconds whether you handle their supply. Includes the enquiry form, the tracking and the copy.

02

Business energy SEO

Technical work, commercial-intent keyword mapping and content written by someone who has read a half-hourly settlement report. I target terms a finance manager searches before a renewal, not vanity volume from domestic switchers.

03

Programmatic SEO

Templated pages at scale, built only where genuine differentiating data exists — by supply type, by sector, by region. Done carelessly this earns a manual action. I cap page counts and kill thin templates before they publish.

04

Paid media

Google Ads and Microsoft Ads structured around contract end dates and out-of-contract intent. Negative keyword lists that strip out domestic switchers, price-shoppers and job seekers. Reported on cost per contracted supply, not cost per click.

05

Lead generation

Owned lead flow for your own sales floor: quote funnels, MPAN and MPRN capture, contract-end-date qualification, CRM handoff. Built so the leads belong to you rather than to a third-party data seller reselling the same enquiry five times.

06

Comparison site development

Multi-supplier quote engines, rate tables, EAC and AQ based estimates, and the compliance copy that has to sit around them. Built to load quickly with real tariff data behind it and to hand qualified enquiries to a sales team or a supplier API.

07

TPI marketing

Positioning and demand generation for Third Party Intermediaries who sell on service and transparency rather than on price alone. Covers the site, the search presence and the proof that a business buyer needs before signing a Letter of Authority.

Sector fluency

A test you can apply to any agency in ten seconds.

Ask them what MHHS changes about your renewal conversations. If the answer is vague, keep walking. Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement moves the whole non-half-hourly base onto settled half-hourly data, which means the consumption profile you quote against stops being an estimate built from an EAC and starts being a record. Brokers who can show a customer their actual load shape have a conversation nobody else on the shortlist is having.

The same goes for the pass-through side. A quote that only shows p/kWh and a standing charge hides TNUoS and DUoS movement, and a customer who signs on a headline unit rate and then sees their April invoice will blame you rather than National Grid’s charging statement. CCL sits on top of that. So does a kVA capacity charge that half your half-hourly customers are over-subscribed on and paying for every month.

None of this belongs in a brochure paragraph. It belongs in the page structure: a renewal page that talks about the renewal window, an out-of-contract page that talks about deemed rates, and a half-hourly page that a site with a 500 kVA supply can recognise itself in. That is what topical authority looks like in this market, and it is why generalist content briefs produce pages nobody in the industry reads twice.

06

How the work runs

Four stages, honest timeframes.

  1. Stage 01

    Week 1

    Audit

I go through the site, Search Console, the ads account if there is one, and the enquiry data. You get a written document with the findings ranked by what they cost you, not by how easy they are to fix. Free, and yours whether or not we work together.

  2. Stage 02

    Weeks 2–3

    Scope and quote

A fixed written scope with deliverables, dates and a price. No percentage-of-spend fees, no open-ended discovery phase. If the honest answer is that the work won't pay for itself at your deal volume, I say so at this stage rather than after invoicing.

  3. Stage 03

    Weeks 4–12

    Build

Design, build and content, reviewed in staging with you in the room. Websites typically run six to ten weeks. SEO and paid media start producing data in the first month and meaningful movement between month three and month six — anyone promising faster in this vertical is guessing.

  4. Stage 04

    Ongoing

    Run and report

Monthly reporting on enquiries, qualified enquiries and contracted supplies where your CRM will give me that. When something isn't working I tell you in the report rather than burying it under an impressions chart.

Analyses

Published teardowns of sites in this market.

Independent reviews of business energy websites, written from public sources on a stated date. None of these companies are clients, and none of them have any commercial relationship with me.

Utility Bidder

A large broker site carrying a heavy content library. The review covers how the quote journey was structured, what the templated location pages were doing, and where crawl budget was going.

Fuse Energy

A newer entrant with a supply-side product and an app-first funnel. The review looks at how the business proposition was presented against the domestic one, and what that split did to search visibility.

Usave

A comparison brand covering several utilities at once. The review examines the business energy section specifically: internal linking, page depth, and how the commercial pages competed with the domestic ones.

Questions

Questions I get asked.

Why do you only work with the business energy sector?

Because the compounding is real. Twelve years in commercial energy means I already know what an LOA is, why a COT enquiry converts differently to a renewal, and which keywords bring price-shoppers rather than contract-ready businesses. A generalist agency spends the first three months of a retainer learning that, and bills for the education. The narrower the market, the faster the second project gets better than the first.

What is business energy SEO, exactly?

Ranking for commercial intent terms: business electricity rates, business gas comparison, half-hourly electricity supplier, energy broker for hotels. The searcher is a business owner or a finance manager, volumes are low and values are high, and Google applies money-or-your-life scrutiny to anything touching business cost. That means author attribution, real contact details and content that survives a read by somebody who works in the industry. It is closer to financial services SEO than to local trades SEO.

What does programmatic SEO mean for a broker?

Building page templates that fill from a data set you genuinely own or can source: supply types, sectors, regions, distribution network areas. It works when each page carries something the others don’t — different charging context, different sector load profile, different local supplier mix. It fails, badly, when the only variable is a place name. I cap the page count and cut templates that can’t clear that bar before anything publishes.

Does Google Ads work for business energy leads?

It works when the account is built around contract timing rather than raw volume. Broad match on business electricity burns budget on domestic switchers and affiliates. Exact and phrase match on renewal, out-of-contract and deemed-rate intent, with a quote form asking for the MPAN core and the contract end date, produces leads a sales floor will actually call. Expect to spend a month building the negative keyword list before the numbers look sensible.

How long does SEO take in this market?

First movement in six to twelve weeks on longer-tail commercial terms if the technical base is sound. Competitive head terms take six to twelve months, and on some of them the incumbent has a decade of links you are not going to catch this year. I would rather tell you that at the quote stage. Anyone offering page one in ninety days for business electricity prices is selling you something else.

Can you redesign our site without losing rankings?

Yes, and it is mostly discipline rather than cleverness. Full URL inventory before anything moves, one-to-one 301 mapping, the same or better content on every page that earns traffic, internal links rebuilt rather than reset, and a staging crawl compared against the live crawl before launch. The traffic dips people talk about after a redesign almost always come from pages that quietly disappeared or content that was cut for design reasons.

What actually makes a broker site convert?

Load speed on mobile, a form that asks for the minimum needed to produce a quote, and being explicit about what you procure. Most sites lose the enquiry before the form: the page takes five seconds to become usable and the business owner who searched at 8am from a phone has already gone back to the results page. After that it’s proof — a named team, a real phone number, and copy that reads like it was written by someone who has seen a bill.

Do you work with suppliers as well as brokers?

Yes. Business energy suppliers, comparison sites and switching platforms are all in scope, and the supplier-side work is usually about the acquisition journey and the SME content estate rather than the brand site. The one thing I won’t do is run competing search campaigns for two brokers chasing the same terms in the same region at the same time.

What does the free audit include?

A written document, usually eight to fifteen pages. Technical crawl findings, Core Web Vitals on mobile with the field data where it exists, the commercial keyword set you rank for versus the set you should, a review of the quote journey with the specific points where enquiries drop, and a ranked list of fixes with an honest note on which ones I’d do myself and which you can hand to an in-house developer.

How does pricing work?

Everything is scoped and quoted in writing before work starts. Websites are a fixed project fee, SEO and paid media are monthly retainers with a stated minimum term and nothing beyond it. No percentage-of-ad-spend fees, and no charge for the audit. The current floors are published on the pricing page rather than hidden behind a discovery call.

Next step

Send me your URL. You’ll get the audit either way.

No pitch deck, no discovery call before you’ve seen anything useful. Send the site address and I’ll come back with the written findings, usually within three working days. If the honest answer is that you don’t need an agency yet, that’s what the document will say.
